My throat tightens as I watch Evelyn’s expression fall when Charlotte puts her hand on my leg. Her bright green eyes dim, their normal warmth nowhere to be found. My spine stiffens and I glare at the unwanted physical touch. Evelyn excuses herself before I can act, promising to order my normal from Gallaghers. Though, I would rather order from The Flame as it’s my future brother-in-law’s newest restaurant. It’s only been open for six months but has become a weekly regular for me.

Evelyn knew that.

She knows everything about me.

She pays attention and while I used to think it was just because she’s insanely good at her job, I now know the truth. I’ve been impatiently glaring at my phone all day waiting for her to message me back.

I need to know if she would be willing to give me a chance now that I’ve pulled my head out of my ass and realized what was right in front of me. Would she think that it’s too late? Is she so set on moving past me that she won’t give me, us, the time of day?

The pained look on her face just now tells me I still have a fighting chance. I should’ve gone to her as soon as I opened her message yesterday. I should’ve walked out, tangled my hands in her hair and kissed the hell out of her before dragging her to my office and bending her over my desk.

Something I would desperately love to do.

But, instead, I messaged her back to ask the questions I was too chickenshit to ask up front. I just pray she’ll understand when she finds out that it was me all along.

Evelyn pushes the button on my control panel to fog the tempered glass. I groan internally because I really hoped she would want to prevent me and Charlotte from having more privacy.

Personally, I want as many people to walk by and see us together as possible. A way to force Charlotte to remain professional.

A trait she unfortunately lacks.

Anytime she gets me alone she becomes bolder.

Hell, the only reason I agreed to meet with her today is because my mother asked me to. My sister wants a joint bachelor/bachelorette party at my beach house and Charlotte needs help planning. Or so I’ve been told.

My mother’s also hoping to marry me off, though, I have no idea why she would think Charlotte could ever be the right person for me. She’s spoiled, condescending and downright rude to people. While she tries to hide her true personality around me, I’m not blind or oblivious to the way she treats those she deems below her caliber.

“Well, it appears that assistant of yours isn’t as dense as she looks,” Charlotte purrs, running her hand up my arm, wrapping long witch-like fingers around my bicep. I encircle her wrist, gently prying her hand away. Her lips purse annoyed with me for stopping her advance before she pouts and slides closer on the couch. The leather squeaking as she moves.
